The experience

Sail beyond the ordinary Arctic cruise and experience Svalbard as part of a small expedition crew aboard Tilvera. Starting in Longyearbyen at 78° North, this eight-day sailing expedition heads into the remote fjords, glaciers and ice-filled waters of the Svalbard archipelago in search of the wildlife that thrives at the edge of the Arctic. Polar bears may roam the ice and shoreline. Walruses gather along remote coasts, while Arctic foxes and Svalbard reindeer inhabit the tundra. At sea, keep watch for belugas, minke whales, seals and an extraordinary variety of seabirds returning to their Arctic breeding grounds. Wildlife encounters can never be guaranteed — and that unpredictability is part of exploring a genuinely wild place. Rather than following a rigid cruise itinerary, Tilvera sails according to the conditions. Wind, weather, sea ice and wildlife help determine where the expedition goes next, opening opportunities to anchor in remote fjords, approach spectacular glaciers, explore by Zodiac and kayak through Arctic waters beneath the midnight sun. And you don’t have to experience the expedition simply as a passenger. Join the crew in the daily rhythms of the boat, learn about sailing and help use Tilvera’s scientific equipment. The team may deploy a hydrophone to listen beneath the surface — revealing the sounds of ice and marine life that would otherwise remain hidden. With a small expedition vessel as your floating base, this is an intimate way to encounter Svalbard: sailing, learning, exploring and reconnecting with a natural world where wildlife — not a timetable — sets the pace.
